The Dalgona Coffee Hype 본문
Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Youtube and Tiktok... The Dalgona coffee craze appeared everywhere on social media with people making their own and posting about it. It seems that at the height of community lockdown and quarantine due to COVID-19, people found this trendy beverage they can make at home to be an innovation to their usual coffee-shop-bought iced coffee.
Dalgona coffee is a beverage made by whipping equal proportions of instant coffee powder, sugar, and hot water until it becomes creamy and its consistency becomes icing-like. It is then added to cold or hot milk. Occasionally, it is topped with coffee powder, cocoa, crumbled biscuits, or honey.
So, where did Dalgona coffee actually come from?
This beverage has origins from India, Pakistan, and Macau, where it is also known as whipped coffee or beaten coffee. Then, its sudden surge in popularity happened when it appeared on a Korean TV show called Pyunstorang in January. We all know the influence of the Korean wave.
Upon trying and drinking it in Macao, famous Korean actor Jung Il-woo coined the word "dolgona" because of its resemblance to the Korean sponge candy with the same name.
It has since then gone viral, with everyone showing off their latest creation. The ingredients are simple, you just need to have a little patience in the whipping process. You can also put it in a nice glass with your take on how to present it to give it a little edge.
