Facebook vs Instagram vs Twitter

I don't know if you've noticed or not, but teens and young people, maybe even adults, have different themes in their posts depending on the SNS they use.

Just from observation on fellow young people and users, there seems to be a general norm in using these social media sites:

Facebook

With 2.4 billion users worldwide, there's no denying that you can find anyone on Facebook especially if your country is considered to be one of the most active.

Facebook contents are largely composed of memes (pictures with comical content) and shared posts on daily inspirations and feel good things. This is where people keep themselves updated on what's happening with their friends. This is generally your typical sharing website where you post anything you want to be seen by your friends and family. In short, Facebook is where you post safe content relatable to all users.

Instagram

Instagram is also widely used having 1 billion users but clearly has a lesser crowd than Facebook.

On Instagram, pictures are given more focus. It seems that when you view Instagram, this is where people post about their creativity and hobbies. Instagram posts often contain vacation pictures, unique and trendy food, and even showing off a new outfit.

Instagram is where you show off your best life or where you keep track of some goals you checked off your bucket list like a trip to your dream destination, eating your favorite food, and finally wearing your new shoes. This is where you can apply your photo processing skills. Generally, since it has a lesser audience, you get to be more of yourself, allowing peers who have the same interest as you see a more specific part of yourself. Aesthetics plays a major role in Instagram feeds.

Twitter

The total number of monthly active Twitter users is 330 million, a far cry from Facebook and Instagram. Twitter also has a mix of varied age groups but the most dominant is 18-24-year-olds.

I believe twitter culture allows users to boldly say what's on their mind. Things that they cannot post on Facebook because of the more traditional point of view of the audience there.

I believe that twitter's appeal is being an outlet of emotion. In twitter, you can freely rant about a bad day, share a funny story from your encounter with someone the bus, share what kind of food you're craving or even crying over a broken heart and no one seems to mind. With this, users feel safer to express emotion and event rant on politics but they don't have to be shy or ashamed because its a norm.
