Simple College Studying Tips

Finally, you’re at a point in your life when you’re actually starting to fulfill your dreams and studying for your dream job and career. After years of juggling co-curricular activities, maintaining grades, and joining all the clubs that you possibly can in high school, you finally got into your dream university.

However, you realize that life as a college student is actually different. You have study loads far greater than that in high school. A short quiz is like a high school long exam and you find yourself overwhelmed by the amount of syllabus. Not to mention missing your family if you live in a dormitory or an apartment and you won’t be able to go home in weeks or even months.

Just to give you a kickstart, here are some simple college studying tips:

Try out different study styles to see what fits you best

There is no perfect study style applicable to everyone. What works for one student may not work for another. You can try different ones like making your own notes from the textbook which means taking information and writing them down and having your own compilation. You can also try flashcards, sticky notes, and even making your own PowerPoint presentation. For others, they do an initial reading then a final reading to really test if they understood. Follow what makes you the most productive.

Add accents of color

Yes, reading a lot of words can be so boring that it sucks the life out of you. Just to make it a little fun, you can use different colorful materials. It is actually said that using specific colors can improve learning: green for concentration, orange for lifting your mood, and blue for productivity. You can actually make use of different highlighter colors for classifying information. For example, color red for definition, color green for main topics, color yellow for important examples.

Have a study place

It’s important that you study in a place where you can focus on. If you are easily distracted, find a place that is totally quiet. If you study in your bedroom, try to avoid studying in bed because you can become sleepy. Having a well-lit study table is better. If you like the energy and ambiance of coffee shops and coworking spaces, then you can. However, it isn’t exactly a requirement. Studying in the school library is actually good because it’s quiet and free

Never ever procrastinate

In college, every second counts. If you have an exam next week, it’s better you start studying a week ahead while you have the time because you never know, maybe another professor will announce a quiz then you’ll have multiple subjects to study for.

Have a planner

May it be a daily planner or the calendar in your phone, never forget to list down things you have to do and events that will come up so that you can keep track of your progress. List things like reports, quizzes, deadlines, and even university events. Trust me, there’s great satisfaction in crossing off a task in your to-do list.
